From Pastor Eileen States
This past week, I asked my children to sing a song at church that has been very special to me: Find Us Faithful by Steve Green. I remember attending one of his concerts in the 1980s and hearing this song for the first time. Even as a young child, the lyrics left a lasting impression on my heart. I was blessed to grow up surrounded by people who guided me toward Jesus, helping me fall in love with Him and ultimately make the decision to follow Him.
Some of the lyrics go like this:
“We’re pilgrims on the journey of the narrow road / And those who’ve gone before us line the way…”
“Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful…”
The song paints life as a pilgrimage, not a casual stroll, but a purposeful journey along the “narrow road.” It reminds us that others have gone before us, forming a “great cloud of witnesses.” Their lives, faith, and example become part of our story. Often, we think of faith in personal terms: “Will I believe? Will I stand?” These questions matter—but this song shifts the focus: “What will my faithfulness mean to those who come after me?”
“May the footprints that we leave lead them to believe / And the lives we live inspire them to obey.”
These lyrics challenge us to live not only for ourselves but for future generations. In our homes, workplaces, church, and friendships, the choices we make and the consistency of our faith become part of the legacy we leave behind.
When the song says, “May all who come behind us find us faithful,” it isn’t calling for perfection. It calls for steadfastness, commitment, and integrity, a quiet faithfulness that perseveres even when life is difficult.
The reference to the narrow road reminds us of Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7:13‑14: the way that leads to life is narrow, and few find it. But we are not alone. Those who have gone before us, through hardship, trial, and quiet devotion, encourage us to remain faithful in our own journey.
Later, the song continues:
“After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone / And our children sift through all we’ve left behind…”
Life passes, circumstances change, but what remains? The evidence of a life lived faithfully, both visible and unseen.
What footprints am I leaving? Not just in big moments, but in daily faithfulness—in how I treat others, how I respond when no one is watching, how I pour into the next generation.
Will those who come behind me find me faithful? Faithfulness isn’t flashy. It’s consistent. It’s loyal to God, obedient to His Word, and loving to others regardless of the circumstances around us.
May this be our heart’s desire as we journey together as pilgrims, until we reach our final destination: a home in God’s Kingdom, together with all those we have encouraged along the way.
