Don't be surprised when He hands you a shovel

From Pastor Joseph Wamack
Hello MAC Family,
One of the aspects of the Christian walk I ponder and reflect on, and have changed my view and perspective on at different times in my life is-how much does God expect us to “do” versus how much can we pray, and He does the work for us?
I personally think God asks us to be more active and more involved in our own Christian walk and journey than we might assume. Maybe that is what Paul meant when he said, “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you both to will and to do His good pleasure.” Philippians 2:12-13. We have to “work it out.” We do not save ourselves, but God supplies the means and how we use and apply that is up to us and our dedication and love for Him.
If you ask God to move a mountain in your life, don’t be surprised when He hands you a shovel. God is not passive, but we certainly are not called to be passive either. We should raise up a holy sweat as we serve God. I found this poem. I agree with it, but I would also welcome your thoughts about it. What do you think? Do you agree with it? Some of it? None of it? Tell me what you think as we serve and grow together.
Does God answer every prayer? Yes, He does-but often the answer is NO.
I asked God to take away my destructive habit. God said, NO.
“It is not for Me to take away your habit, but for you to overcome and give it up.”
I asked God to make my broken body whole. God said, NO.
“The spirit may be whole, but in this world-the body is destined to fade away.”
I asked God to give me patience. God said, NO.
“Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn’t given, it is hammered and shaped on the anvil of adversity.”
I asked God to give me happiness. God said, NO.
“I pour out blessings; Happiness and contentment are decisions you make for yourself.”
I asked God to spare me pain. God said, NO.
“Suffering draws you apart from worldly things and allows you to see your need of Me.”
I asked God to make my spirit grow. God said, NO.
“You must create opportunities for growth to occur, but I promise to prune you to make you fruitful.”
I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life. God said, NO.
“I will give you Life, so that you may enjoy all things.”
I asked God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me. God said: YES.
“My child, finally you have the idea.”
May you love one another as He has loved you today.
