My Call, My Quest

From Jeff Freeman

A quest is a long, hard search or journey to find or do something important. When you say "my quest," you mean your own personal goal, mission, or search that you are trying to finish.

Over the last few months, my mom has come out of the fog from my dad's death 3 years ago. Recently, she decided to move to Missouri, where she resides now. In her new town, Moberly, she is coming alive. It is amazing to watch her live out her God-given life. She is attending church on Sabbaths and midweek services. She is ministering to people around her. At 80, she is on a quest to finish her life well.

As I watch her example, at 56, am I on a quest to finish my life well? Are you?

Within this context I had my annual physical scheduled for September 8.  Upon returning from moving my mom out to Missouri, life quickly sped up with school getting ready to start and teachers meetings. Preparing for my physical, I found my last 2 years worth of annual physical results. Over a dinner I mentioned to my wife, "I wonder if I got serious and being more careful with what enters my mouth, what would happen to my results this year?"

This started "my quest" to guard my body from anything that wasn't "whole foods" until my physical.  That included sweets, white flour, and many other items that are really tasty. It also included choosing to not eat too late at night.

September 8 has passed. I got my test results back. My results are recorded in an app called "My Quest"  (very fitting name). As I compared my numbers with previous years, some amazing changes have been recorded. Here are just a few of the differences. My total cholesterol dropped from 200 to 156. My triglycerides dropped from 153 to 100. My LDL-cholesterol dropped from 122 to 89.

I like those numbers. My body is better off with these numbers. My weight has dropped. My wife says I look younger.

Now what do I do? Do I keep going on my quest or do I relax and go backwards? Truth be told, I am not decided. I know what I should do. I just really need to decide whether my quest to finish well is my goal or is it not.

"My call, my quest" for sure, but God does have a best plan, and His plan definitely improved my numbers. So maybe the important piece that needs to be included is, "my call, my quest, through God's ways" to finish well!?

With that addition, my choice seems clear, I will finish well. And you?
