Be the Miracle

From Pastor Joseph Wamack
A photographer was invited as a guest to a dinner party, and so he decided to take along a few of his favorite pictures to show to the hostess and other guests. He was quite good as a photographer and that evening took along with him pictures of birds in flight, mountains with mist on them, and children with faces full of joy. As the hostess looked at the pictures, she commented “These are very good! You must have a very nice camera!” He made no response to her comment, as dinner was about to be served.
The meal was excellent; the food was well prepared, fresh, healthy and well-seasoned. The entire evening was a delight. At the end of the evening, as she was escorting her guests to the door, he thought about the comments she had made earlier and then said to her, “That was a really delicious meal! You must have some very good pots and pans.”
Having the appropriate tools to do one’s work is essential. A good photographer needs a good camera. A good cook needs the proper pans, ingredients and oven. But it is not the camera which makes a picture good - it is the photographer. It is not the pans that make the lovely meal - it is the cook. The camera and the pans are tools in the hand of a skilled and gifted master.
When I worked at Florida Hospital, their motto was, “The skills to heal-the spirit to care.” Skills are essential - very, very important. But it is the human touch, the photographer’s eye, the cook’s flair to make a dish. That is the “spirit to care.”
God made us as flesh and blood people. Even though this can be a beautiful world, and a frustrating world, all at the same time, it is the people that make it what it is. God made you who you are. God doesn’t necessarily create miracles in your life - YOU are the miracle. You get up every day, you take care of other people, you take care of yourself, you walk, you learn, you love, you grow. You are a unique creation with your own gifts to use and share with others.
We have had It Is Written conducting meetings in our church during the month of October. Eric Flickinger, the speaker, has done a fantastic job. He is humble, articulate, well versed in the Bible and keeps his meetings concise and interesting. His Bible, his PowerPoint slides and his handouts are all tools in the Hand of God to accomplish God’s will. But it is the Spirit working through Pastor Eric that creates the miracle of change and conversion in others.
Maybe you aren’t a wise Bible scholar, but you are someone who has your own unique set of skills and talents. You are gifted and called to be useful in spreading beauty, God’s love and light to those around you.
You can look outside yourself for the best tools and essentials to do what you do, but it is YOU that is needed today - your caring, your kind words, your smile, your patience, your insights. Don’t wait for a miracle - BE the miracle.
